Average stay with a few minor problems

My recent stay at this hotel warrants only an average rating. Check-in was efficient and professional. The hotel has a very good location halfway between Downtown Houston and the Galleria area with its numerous shops and virtually unlimited dining options. Although located directly on the main thoroughfare Southwest Freeway (US59/I-69), noise was not noticeable in my 6th floor room and the bed was quite comfortable. Internet also performed well with acceptable speeds. On the first morning, the shower was lukewarm at best. The staff promptly responded to my complaint, and the building engineer advised he had increased the temperature, whereby within minutes of his representation, the water was indeed very hot. However, the next morning the same problem returned. Hot water appears to only be available upon request at this hotel. I left my room for the day at 11AM and returned at 5PM, yet it had not been cleaned, and housekeeping was reportedly gone for the day, but I was provided with ample fresh towels. The gym is basic and should be adequate for most workouts, as it was well maintained with treadmills, elliptical trainers, bikes, and dumbbells up to 50lbs., but the drinking water machine was non-functional and I was advised by an employee that water was no longer provided in the gym, although at least towels were provided. My card access key failed at least once a day during my requiring a trip to the Front Desk, but this is admittedly not unique to those hotels who use this system. On the positive side, the buffet breakfast was above average and there was an omelet bar for custom orders. There were no major problems and the room rate of $120.00 was reasonable, but in light of its numerous minor problems, average is a fair rating.

The room was quite large and spacious but there was no safe, no fridge, no hairdryer and no Iron. The latter two were requested twice. The bistro in the hotel was not very good for dinner, but breakfast was ok. There seemed to be only one person working in the main dining room, Things on the menu were not available and when an order was placed we waited for ages. We eventually gave up and left. There didn't seem to be any other eating places close by to walk to.

Noisy cleaners but nice rooms

We stayed here for one night as part of a road trip. The hotel is nice and the staff checking in were friendly. The rooms were nice and clean and the beds were comfy. The cleaners however were so unbelievably load, slamming doors more times than I could count. After approximately 15-20 minutes of the door next to ours slamming I stuck my head out and saw them and said that the slamming was so loud it was vibrating our room to which she replied “I know” ?! If you know how loud you are slamming the doors why are you doing it? She eventually said they would try to be quiet but it was a shocking attitude. This is why I haven’t given 5 star. We didn’t use the pool, it looked very small and basic.

Clean comfortable hotel

While in Houston for a night we stayed at the this older but very nice Crowne Plaza. The location was perfect for getting to the two restaurants (Kenny and Ziggy’s NY Delicatessen and Grace’s Southern Cooking—both excellent) we wanted to try and to the NRG Center for an event. The lobby was clean and well appointed and staff were very nice. We needed a cart for our luggage as I was in a wheelchair, but none were available. Another check in guest noticed our situation and quickly went up, unloaded and returned a cart. Very nice. The plain room was quite clean, a good size and everything functioned well. Don’t expect to find an ice machine however. The mattress was somewhat old but comfortable enough. We did see them loading up on new mattresses however. All in all this was a clean, safe and well run hotel. We would stay here again when in Houston.

Things I liked: Great location for our plans. It was only a few minutes' drive to Rice University and a 10-minute drive to downtown. The neighborhood was decent. The king suite room was large. Things that didn't work for me: The AC was very loud and blew directly onto the bed, making it very difficult to sleep. As a result, my husband caught a cold. The sink and shower had only tepid water, and during the shower, the tub didn't drain efficiently, leaving us standing in soapy water. The wallpaper in the bathroom was chipping, which detracted from the overall appearance of the room. There were not enough towel racks, shelves, or hooks to hang towels or clothes, which made it difficult to keep things organized.
